Uncle David’s Ice Cream and the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce celebrated the ice cream stand’s official grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony July 19.

Located at 237 Rehoboth Ave., Uncle David’s Ice Cream Shop is the newest venture of the Boardwalk Buddy Walk and offers employment opportunities to individuals with Down syndrome. Boardwalk Buddy Walk founders Sharonlee Samson Diehl and Dennis Diehl envisioned an ice cream business staffed by individuals with Down syndrome, which correlates to the Boardwalk Buddy Walk’s mission to create a community where individuals with Down syndrome can live, learn, work and play.

Uncle David’s Ice Cream, inspired by David Samson, Sharonlee’s brother who also had Down syndrome, was launched in June 2023 with their mobile catering business. Construction on the downtown Rehoboth Beach shop started in January 2024 and opened with a soft opening June 28. They partner with Hopkins Farm Creamery to “serve their scoops with a smile” to the Rehoboth Beach community.
