Friends, family and supporters of employees at Uncle David’s Ice Cream gathered for an ice cream social June 25 at Honey Bee Farm outside Milton.

Uncle David’s Ice Cream is a recently created business for individuals with Down syndrome. The business is named after David Samson, who served as the original inspiration for the Boardwalk Buddy Walk, which was created in 2006. Samson, who died in 2018, is the brother-in-law and brother of Boardwalk Buddy Walk founders Dennis and Sharonlee Diehl.

The few-hour-long event was a celebration of the hard work it took to get to the point of opening. Dennis Diehl briefly addressed the crowd, thanking everyone in attendance for their support. He told a story of how his brother-in-law replayed a painful interaction with name-calling bullies 40 years after it happened.

“It’s a horrible word that begins with ‘R’ that I’m not going to repeat here,” said Dennis. “I don’t know what happened to those three kids, but I know that David now has an ice cream shop named after him.”

That drew a hearty round of applause from all in attendance.

In addition to ice cream, the event had face painting, a cornhole tournament and sand art. Food was provided by Jimmy’s Grille Catering.

For now, Uncle David’s Ice Cream has two mobile carts that can be used at a variety of locations, including schools, hospitals, assisted-living facilities and other spaces.

However, looking to next summer, the plan is to open a spot at 237 Rehoboth Ave. The property is currently the home to Just Comfort Shoes, which is owned by the Diehls.

The plan is to split the space in half, with the shoe store on the left and the ice cream shop on the right, said Sharonlee.
