UNICO Delaware recently presented its 2024 Brian Piccolo scholarships, named to honor the Italian American football hero who played for Wake Forest University and for the Chicago Bears (1965-69), to student-athlete honorees during a ceremony at St. Edmond Parish Hall, Rehoboth Beach.
Six students sponsored by members of the Rehoboth Area Chapter were awarded monetary gifts along with a copy of “Passage to Liberty - A History of Italian Immigration” so they could further explore their roots. Nominees were required to be of Italian heritage, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and participate in a sporting activity. Letters of recommendation from coaches and/or teachers were also required, stating the outstanding character traits exemplified by Piccolo: courage, friendship, loyalty, teamwork, dedication, sense of humor and anti-bias.
The keynote speaker was Michael Frederick, Cape Henlopen High School football coach. He encouraged parents, grandparents and friends to continue to support youth in both academics and athletics, always important in developing good character and citizenship.
Scholarship recipients this year are Lola Singh, Jude Patin, Nora Kelly, Brooke Vogel, Peter Alexander Polo and Colleen McGuire.
