The Rehoboth Area Chapter and the Delmarva Chapter of UNICO presented its Brian Piccolo Award and Scholarships Nov. 13 at St. Edmond Catholic Church’s Fellowship Hall. This award, established in 1977, is given to a local senior athlete of Italian-American heritage who exhibits the character traits modeled by the legendary football star of the Chicago Bears in the late 1960s.
Those character traits are courage, friendship, loyalty, teamwork, dedication, sense of humor and anti-bias. The student recipient of the award receives a plaque to commemorate this national honor. All nominees and their coach and/or family member were honored guests at the dinner, and the students will receive a book on Italian heritage, a DVD on the life of Brian Piccolo, and gift certificates from local restaurants, movies and activities centers.
The winner’s high school athletic department will receive a donation of $1,000, which will therefore benefit students of all ethnic backgrounds.
