Roughly five months after breaking her leg, Rehoboth Beach’s longtime UPS driver Rhonda Fitzhugh has returned to delivery packages. To celebrate, she was chauffeured Oct. 6 up and down Rehoboth Avenue on the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company’s vintage engine.

“It was great,” said Fitzhugh. “It was very emotional to see all my customers again.”

Fitzhugh has been delivering packages for UPS in Rehoboth Beach for 30 years. Fitzhugh broke her leg in two places while working in June after the cable holding the back door broke and came down directly on her leg.

“It was a mess. Because of the injury, my leg had to be in a wound bag for 11 weeks, but I’m all healed up now,” said Fitzhugh.

Her first day back was Oct. 4. It felt great to get back, she said, adding that her customers would check in daily and send her get-well packages.

“I was starting to get antsy. I started missing my people,” said Fitzhugh.

She may have been delivering packages for three decades, but Fitzhugh said the injury wasn’t going to be what forced her to retire.

“No, no, no. That was not going to define my career,” said Fitzhugh. “I’m going to go out on top.”
