As part of a 10-year Delivering for America plan, the United States Postal Service is reaching out to hire new employees. A series of job fairs is taking place at post offices across the nation, including one held Feb. 24 at the Rehoboth Beach Post Office.
Crystal Vorn, a USPS workforce planning specialist in charge of job fairs in the region, said the post office is dealing with the same problem of worker shortages that other companies are experiencing. “We really need employees, especially to fill in for our prime time during the summer when vacations occur,” she said.
According to Tabitha Michael, officer in charge at the Rehoboth post office, there are openings in Rehoboth for 18 rural carriers, 15 weekend and holiday carriers, seven city carriers and three clerks.
The Rehoboth job fair listed openings in six other post offices, including Dover, Frankford, Laurel, Milford, Millsboro and Milton. Post office personnel were at the job fair to provide information on open positions and assist applicants with filling out paperwork. All applicants must be 18 years of age, available to work weekends and holidays, and pass drug screening and a criminal background check. Pay for entry-level jobs averages $21 per hour.
With nearly 600,000 workers, the USPS is the leading independent government agency employer.
