Vikings High School Field Hockey Camp heats up Cape fields

Skill and drills and lots of playing time
August 5, 2021

The Cape Henlopen Vikings High School Field Hockey Camp is five days of “we don’t mess around” fun with a morning of skills and drills taught by college players with bona fides. A lunch break is followed by an afternoon of six full-field, officiated, 12-minute games – a chance to let the ponies run. Wednesday and Friday are half-days.

“Kids want to learn, but they also love to play,” said longtime hockey coach Debbie Windett. “The games are not interrupted; it's not a coaching clinic built around scrimmages. Kate [Austin] and I do no coaching.”

Coaches for the camp are Darby Klopp, Alia Marshall, Marcella Sabbagh, Cami Smith and Brittney Stewart.

Speed and agility coaches are Cece Cardano and Ellis Gaulden.

Tracey Griesbaum, former head coach at Iowa, designed the camp curriculum.

Umpires working the camp are Beth Bozman, Deb Hauth and Brenda Mitstifer.

The camp was open to players from all schools.

Practice for the fall field hockey season begins Monday, Aug. 16.

Cape has home play days scheduled Saturday, Aug. 21 and Friday, Aug. 27, and an away play day at Pocomoke Saturday, Aug. 28.

Darby Klopp (Franklin and Marshall), Alia Marshall (Northwestern), Marcella Sabbagh (Christopher Newport) and Cami Smith (West Chester) are all looking forward to a full fall season of college hockey.
