Vikings swim to victory over Bucs

January 9, 2020

The Cape swim teams each moved to 4-0 with a 113-54 girls’ victory and a boys’ 113-52 win over Milford Jan. 7 at the Sussex Family YMCA in Rehoboth.

The girls won 10 of 11 events, while the Vikings’ boys team took first in nine of the 11 events.

“It’s always tough in the winter season dealing with sickness, injuries and vacations,” said Cape head coach Bill Geppert. “Lots of people traveling over break, missing practice which makes endurance sports like swimming tough. Swim times were a little off in this meet. Milford seemed to be in the same shape we were in, but we will all get back into the groove now that the meat of the season has just begun. It's tough trying to accommodate all the things that go on during the winter sports season. ”

“The meet went really well and the team tried their best in each event,” said junior Aya Daisey. “There are a few people we’re trying to figure out who to place in certain relays for the girls, but in the meantime the team is looking good.”

“I think we did really well against Milford,” said sophomore Heidi Simmons. “Most of our swimmers continued practicing over winter break, and I really think that helped. I think everyone did a great job.”

“I thought we did rather well against Milford,” said sophomore Marcus Gromofsky. “They put up the good fight in many events, but in the end we came out victorious. I think we are all a little on edge about the meets next week with Caesar Rodney and Sussex Tech. They are two of the best teams in the same week, so we will see if we can keep our performance levels high and keep fighting for conferences. I can’t wait to see what happens.”

“We saw a lot of growth in this meet,” said senior Anna Stancofski. ”Some people got better times in their usual events, while others tried something new. It was a beneficial meet and will help us continue to prepare for the rest of the season.”

Cape hosts Northern Division rivals Caesar Rodney Tuesday, Jan. 14, and Sussex Tech Thursday, Jan. 16. The CR girls and boys are both 6-1, while the Tech squads are 4-1.

“We are moving into the meat grinder of our schedule,” said Geppert. “CR and Tech are great programs coached by top-notch coaching staffs. We will have to be ready for next week. It's what I love most about coaching – the challenge of going against these teams. It is both motivating and nerve-wracking all at the same time, a real adrenaline rush. We are looking forward to swimming some fast times.”
