The Weis Markets outside Rehoboth Beach is set to close Saturday, May 14.

Located in the Rehoboth Marketplace shopping center, off Miller Road north of Rehoboth, this Weis Markets location opened in 2016, when the company took over Food Lion stores in Rehoboth, Lewes, Long Neck and Millville. The four stores were the first Weis Markets in Delaware for the Pennsylvania-based grocer.

Rumors have been swirling for days, and employees at the location have confirmed the closure, but declined to comment. Steve Rayburn, store manager for the Lewes location, also confirmed the impending closure, but also declined to comment on why the Rehoboth location is shutting down.

In an email April 13, Dennis Curtin, Weis Markets spokesperson, also confirmed the store will be closing on or before May 14, but he did not say why it’s happening.

The Rehoboth site has been home to a grocery store since the late 1980s, when Food Lion opened there.

Weis Markets opened in 1912 in Sunbury, Pa. The company has stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia and West Virginia. According to the company’s website, Weis Markets employs more than 23,000 people in stores, its distribution center, corporate office and manufacturing facilities.
