Officers, members inducted in Millsboro Middle School club

Officers and members of the state’s only Junior Optimist International Club were inducted at an Oct. 26 ceremony at Millsboro Middle School.

Assistant Principal Chris Costello commended students and club advisor Shelley McBride for launching Delaware’s first middle school-level club three years ago.

McBride recognized club President Ayla Steele, Vice President Trinity Jackson, Treasurer Stella Guajardo and Secretary Emmaleigh Peiker for their work in managing the student-run organization.

When club members helped serve Thanksgiving dinner at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Millsboro two years ago, McBride said, a little old lady they served began crying and hugged one of the students because she was so thankful. This year, McBride said, the club has been busy brainstorming new ways to better the community.

Mike DeFiore, governor of the Maryland South Delaware District Optimist International Club, said the organization has been in existence for more than 100 years. Optimist Clubs hold annual essay and speech contests to award students and help them enhance their skills, he said.

DeFiore urged students to continue fundraising and to use that money to give back to the community.

Cathy Hartman, past president of the Optimist Club of Sussex County, commended students for their commitment to the club, which helps promote happiness and generosity, and wished them success this school year.

Students, families and guests recited the Optimist Creed and watched a video about the Optimist Club organization before enjoying refreshments to close out the ceremony.
