DAY 16 • 27 AUGUST 2017 • NEW PHILADELPHIA
We opted today for a larger, flatter, straighter highway and knocked off 40 miles on Route 250 west between New Philadelphia and Wooster. The road still had plenty of hills but they wren’t so steep that we had to get off and push up.
The shoulder was wide but super bumpy and there was plenty of traffic. More than once we questioned whether we would have traded the steeper hills on the back roads, or the more miles that two trails would have added, for the bumpy shoulder and the traffic. No conclusion.
Starting our third week on the road. Today’s highlight was super juicy yellow Freestone peaches from a roadside stand and riding through the College of Wooster campus in Wooster.
My friend Bruce - now philosophizing with the angels in heaven - graduated from Wooster. Albert went there too but I think he took off early when he heeded the whistle of a riverboat on the Ohio or Mississippi and has made a career in the maritime industry ever since. I know Wooster must be a good school because it was good enough for those two good friends.
Off to Oberlin tomorrow.
Today’s 40 miles brings our grand total on this adventure - to date - to 559 miles. Another 500 to go to get to Traverse City.
Thanks again for keeping us company.
