My friend Janet Enslen rarely cooks, but she loves to eat out with friends. Here in her own words is how she makes Vegan choices in a Burger world.
Vegan Choices in a Burger World
Since starting on my “Vegan Journey” last fall I have learned soooo much. As a single person, though, I rarely cook. So I was challenging the assumption that I would have to start cooking to succeed.
It does seem that it’s hard to eat vegan in most restaurants, but I have also found some vegan gems in this burger world we live in. Even at Five Guys!!!!
Five Guys has consistently ranked as the fastest growing fast food chain in the world over the last five years. In fact, many experts are predicting that its rapid rise will mean it will one day compete with McDonalds as the biggest burger chain in the world.
I found some terrific vegan bright spots at Five Guys. First, the veggie sandwich!! It’s right there on the menu, between the bacon cheeseburger and the hot dog. And it’s very yummy. Your choice of so many “toppings” like mushrooms, onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles, peppers. Add A1, mustard, ketchup and relish for a serious handful.
Second vegan choice: fries or no fries. Even the small fries is BIG so you can share with up to easily 6 people. They are loaded with saturated fat even if they are cooked in peanut oil.
Third thing I like is the beverage choices. In most places it’s hard to find anything but water if you’re trying to avoid sugar AND caffeine. But they have the cool Coke Fountain with dozens of choices that are sugar free and caffeine free. They also have unsweetened iced tea.
Finally I love the free roasted peanuts in the shell. Put a few in your pocket, and be ready with a vegan snack for later.
