With 16 restaurants and bacon artisans preparing to provide an ounce of bacon per sample during the two-day Dewey – Rehoboth Bacon Fest, Justin Redefer said he knows bacon lovers will be in their full glory.
“That’s a pound of bacon each day, for each participant,” said Redefer, event organizer. “At least you’re walking all day, both days.”
Entering its third year, Bacon Fest takes place Saturday, April 23, in Dewey Beach and Sunday, April 24, in Rehoboth Beach.
Redefer said new for this year’s event will be a first, second and third place for both Dewey and Rehoboth, and as previously an overall Best Bacon at the Beach winner.
Redefer said people are really putting a lot of hard work into their bacon creations, and it’s nice to recognize them.
Also new this year is a charitable component to the festival. Redefer said a portion of the ticket sales will go toward SoDel Cares, the philanthropic arm of SoDel Concepts. It’s a good organization to help, he said.
Like the previous two years, Redefer said local artist Angelica “Gel” Clemmer is making the awards for the winners. He said he never knows what she’s going to send him, but he heard this year is a small handmade surfboard with some kind of pig on top.
“That would be a perfect trophy for this area,” he said. “Whatever it is, it’s going to be awesome.”
The festival begins with a package pickup party at 6 p.m., Friday, April 22, at the Dewey Beer Co. Redefer said people don’t have to get their tickets, map and jerseys then, but they can avoid waiting in line Saturday morning.
There are three ticket options, said Redefer, who estimates 500 to 600 participants.
VIP admission includes the official Bacon Fest jersey, two day passes, a VIP tour guide, scorecard, special offers and discounts on lodging. The price for this package is $45.
General admission includes two day passes, scorecard and other special offers. The price for this package is $35.
A one-day pass and kids passes are $20.
Redefer said day-of ticket sales will be available.
