Three Cape soccer seniors set to step up to the college game

May 10, 2016

The Cape boys' soccer team has reached the state semifinals each of the last three years with a combined regular-season record of 42-4. Arguably, the graduating class of 2016 is the most successful in school soccer history.

Three players from the glass signed letters of commitment May 6 to play Division III soccer at the collegiate level.

Steve Matalavage is off to Neumann University in Aston, Pa.; Jack Ashby will play at Lynchburg College; and Tyler Nichols will play at Delaware Valley University.

“I plan to major in sports management at Neumann," Matalavage said. “Jack Norwood and Danny Lewis are there and they like it. Coach Tim Hollenback recruited me to play right wing.”

The Knights play in the Colonial States Athletic Conference and were 6-10-2 last season.

Ashby is ranked 12th in his class of 290 and chose Lynchburg because he wants to major in chemistry then become a pre-dental or pre-med student.

Lynchburg plays in the ODAC conference and was 10-4-4 last year.

“They like my midfield game and the fact that I can finish and I’m a natural left footer,” he said.

Lynchburg is coached by Chris Yeager, now in his 10th season.

Nichols is a center midfielder who will major in sports management at Delaware Valley University, located in Doylestown, Pa.

"I want to be a sports agent,” Tyler said.

The Aggies were 5-13-1 last season. They play in the Freedom Conference and are coached by Tom Drummond, who took over in 2010.
