Farmers market kicks up its heels in Lewes

May 18, 2016

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market's 2016 Hoedown Fundraiser was held May 7 at Cape Henlopen State Park Officer's Club. A large supportive group donated, bid, volunteered, danced, and ate, all to benefit the 2016 market season at the new location, George H.P. Smith Park.

The official hoedown kitchen crew headed by Henlopen City Oyster House Chef Bill Clifton prepared the meal that featured produce and meat from local farmers, including pork from Bohemia Lea Farm, asparagus from Fifer Orchards, and collard greens, spinach, and salad mix from Baywater Greens. The menu also featured BBQ chicken, roasted garlic mash potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. Homemade pies were stacked and ready.

Dogfish Head Brewery provided the best craft beers, and various wines from Teller Wines were featured at the open wine and beer bars.

Live music was provided by Michael Shockley and No Spare Time for everyone to dance until the cows came home.  A live auction was held after dinner which included four-digit license tags, dinners prepared by personal chefs and a Quest Kayak cruise for 10.

Funds from the 2016 Hoedown help the market operate so that its 35 local farmers and vendors can grow, support their families, and continue to build the local food movement on Delmarva. Funds also help support the Bonus Bucks Program that provides matching funds for customers using SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
