Cape soccer dominates Seaford 5-1
The Vikings scored four goals in the first half then went on autopilot to cruise to a 5-1 victory over the Seaford Blue Jays Sept. 13.
Zack Gelof scored twice in the contest. The first came off a throw-in from Dane Palmer at the three-minute mark, the second time the duo hooked up for a score in two games. Gelof then scored on a penalty kick at 23 minutes after a foul in the box.
Max Varela scored off a pass in the middle from striker Richard Carey. Aidan Spoor added an unassisted goal at 38 minutes. That’s the way the first half ended.
After a score from the Blue Jays, Arlleneiri Rodriguez-Garcia hit the back of the net at the 66-minute mark off a pass from Troy Humphries.
Even after winning by four goals, the Vikings coach was not thrilled with the team’s performance.
“We’ve scored six goals in two games,” said Cape head coach Patrick Kilby. “Four have come on set pieces and only two from the flow of play. We need to score more from the flow of play.”
Scoring off throw-ins have been a big part of the Vikings’ offense so far this season.
“Richard [Carey] and Dane [Palmer] are very dangerous from the throw-in,” said Kilby. “Zack [Gelof] has scored each of the last two games from the throw-in from Dane.”
“We didn’t play as well as we could have against Seaford,” said team captain Richard Carey. “We are working hard to flow from the defensive end into offensive play.”
Cape outshot the Jays 18-5 in the contest and held an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Vikings goalkeeper Brent Hochrein stopped four Seaford shots, while Evan Nibblet had 13 saves for the Blue Jays.
Kilby was quick to praise Gelof for the role he is playing this season.
“Zack has taken a real leadership role on the team,” Kilby. “He is being a leader in all facets of the game.”
The Vikings play host to the Peddie School of New Jersey Saturday, Sep. 17 at 1 p.m.
