DRBA Commissioners Cup presented to Lewes
The Delaware River and Bay Authority Commissioners Cup was presented to Lewes Mayor Ted Becker and Cape Henlopen High School Athletic Director Bob Cilento Sept. 28 at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal. Making the trip on the ferry for the presentation was Lower Township Mayor Michael Beck.
On Sept. 10, the Cape Henlopen Vikings football team bested the Lower Cape May Regional Caper Tigers 49-12 to claim the 2016 DRBA Commissioners Cup. The game took place at Legends Stadium in Lewes. Separated by the Delaware Bay and a short trip aboard the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, the schools renewed their football rivalry in 2010. The Cape schools hadn’t played in the regular season since the early 1980s. The host Caper Tigers beat the Vikings 25-3 in that first meeting, while Cape Henlopen has won the last four clashes. The Vikings now lead the series, 4-1.
Becker said the annual game is about more than football.
“You can’t measure the outside benefits of this kind of exposure,” he said, adding that each year student-athletes are treated to a ride on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, sometimes for the first time, and are witness to the beauty of the opposing team’s home turf.
“I don’t mind losing, because I get to see a beautiful town when I come over here to Lewes,” said Beck, who will be leaving office at the end of his term after 16 years as a council member and mayor.
Beck had great things to say about Cape Henlopen’s players and coaches.
“The kids are learning a lot more than just football,” he said. “Coaches all have our admiration because they’re teaching kids the right way.”
