Epworth Introduces “Leashes of Love” Ministry

May 17, 2011

On Sunday, May 15 Epworth celebrated the commissioning of its newest Caring Ministry “Leashes of Love,” a pet visitation ministry that shares the love of pets with nursing home, assisted living and adult daycare residents.

The first graduating class of 11 dogs and 18 adult chaperones received a Pet Ministry Certification diploma for completing a training program held at Doggies at the Beach, a cage-free doggie daycare, grooming and training facility in Rehoboth Beach.

The graduation ceremony began with a graduation prayer by the Rev. Pat Loughlin and a commissioning blessing by the Rev. Jonathan Baker. Each graduate was called up to the chancel area to receive his or her diploma and graduation photograph, with some needing the owner's assistance to maneuver the tall steps, such as five-pound Molly. They confidently strutted their graduation attire: Hudson with his tie, Lucy with her pink pom-pom tail and many dogs wore hair bows and neck scarves.

“The visits have been very well received by the residents and this is just the beginning of a joyful journey with pets in these care communities. We are pleased to be another avenue that Epworth, through its many outreach ministries, serves the greater Rehoboth community.  Since beginning this ministry in March, we have already reached out to approximately 660 residents, with multiple visits to area facilities including Harbor Health-Cadia, Cadbury of Lewes and the Gull House of Beebe Medical Center,” reported chairpersons Robbin Murray and Barbara Kulbaba.

A graduation party of sandal-shaped dog biscuits, water bowls (and cake) were enjoyed by all after the ceremony with wagging tails and owner smiles indicating their commencement  pride.
