Cape volleyball spikes Delmar 3-0

Collier gets double double in Viking victory
October 20, 2016

Cape senior captain Taylor Collier finished with 10 kills and 13 digs and Logan Shuttleworth assisted on 32 points to help lead the Lady Vikings past the Wildcats of Delmar 25-23, 25-17 and 26-24 Oct. 17 at Cape.

“I'm happy to have walked out with the win tonight,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “I thought Delmar applied tremendous pressure from the service line and were able to put a lot of pressure on us with their out-of-system swings. I thought even when we weren't at our best, we were still able to fight through and get the points needed, which is a good sign for us.”

Senior Abby E’Nama and Maddy Holt spiked seven and five kills, respectively. Cape freshman libero Teaghan VanBrunt had nine digs in the contest.

“It's been a long few weeks with having played three games each of the past two weeks and three total this week too,” said Coupe. “I'm hoping we're able to keep our energy up and focused in for these last few matches.”

Delmar’s Avery Wheatly had 14 kills for the Wildcats. Teammate Samantha Lehman assisted on 20 points.

The Vikings (9-2) are back in action Thursday, Oct. 20, with a road game against Caesar Rodney (8-3).

Cape’s then faces Sussex Tech Friday, Oct. 21, in a special match. Cape and Tech are raising money for Prevent Child Abuse Delaware, a non-profit organization that goes directly into the community to better the lives of children in their schools and homes.

“They are truly amazing in what they do, and it is an honor for us, the Cape Vikings, to help them in any way we can,” said junior Logan Shuttleworth. “At our game Friday [which is at 3:30] we will be selling pinwheels for $2 to support their ‘Pinwheels for Prevention Program’ and raffle tickets for a 50/50 raffle. Fun games for the crowd to participate in in-between sets offer fans a chance to win prizes from community donors like Sea Barre, Louie’s Pizza and Thrasher’s French Fries. It’s beautiful to see the union of two rival teams give back to a cause that has touched so many people’s hearts for a community that has served them so well.”
