The Henlopen Soccer Club Wahoos 12U team won the State Cup Championship June 5, 3-1. Sam Ratner, Aria ZiaShakeri and Joseph Warrington scored the goals, beating the top-seeded Hockessin Hammerheads. The Wahoos played five games in a three-weekend tournament against 12U teams, winning 4 and tying 1.
The Wahoos are headed to Lancaster, Pa., Friday, July 1, for the regional championship and will represent Delaware; the group is now called Team Delaware. This is the second team from Sussex County to win the State Cup Championship.
The U-19 River Soccer Club Cosmos, coached by Duncan Smith and Steve Kilby, won the State Cup in 2010. Cape graduates David Mequita and Tristan Karsnitz were members of the team.
