Douglas and Davey ecstatically sprint to finish line

June 13, 2011

The photo is a postcard that tells a story of the Delaware Special Olympics and what it means to competitors and families. There is a motto, "Let me win, but if I cannot, let me be brave in the attempt."

Douglas Mast was out quickly in the Friday, June 10, heat of the 50-meter dash, but then turned back to encourage his friend Davey Frederick to push on hard to the finish line.

Davey's aunt Cherye Frederick, who lives in West Chester, Pa., and is a UVA graduate and artist and mother of four, wrote of the picture, "That brings tears to my eyes. That may very well be the happiest photo I will ever see in my whole life."
