Despite gray skies and chilly winds, many supporters of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities turned out May 6 for The Arc of Delaware's 17th Annual Run, Walk & Roll fundraiser at Wild Quail Golf and Country Club in Wyoming.
The event kicked off with a beautiful rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" sung by the First State Harmonizers, a barbershop group from Milford. Team DeSanctis, led by organizer Tony DeSanctis, was on hand for their 10th consecutive year of participation, bringing their cumulative fundraising total to over $60,000. Other returning teams included Easter Seals, Special Olympics, Kent WildKats, Combat Vets of Delaware, and KenCrest. Team Chesapeake Utilities took part in the race for the first time.
Following the Kiddie K race, runners, walkers and rollers (wheelchair participants) were off at the sound of the starting gun. A mid-race water stop was manned by The Arc's Mid-Del Self Advocacy Group, and participants were cheered on along the course by many onlookers from the community.
During the event, the band Imagine entertained at the pool house. Post-race festivities included refreshments, award presentations, and a special recognition award to Team DeSanctis for their 10th anniversary.
Funds from this event help support The Arc of Delaware and its efforts in Kent and Sussex counties, including a social and recreational program, and monthly dances. For more information, go to www.thearcofdelaware.org.
