Gerald Lynn Hickman, had exemplary naval career

Gerald Lynn Hickman, 71, of Millsboro passed away at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018. He was born Sept. 19, 1946, to the late Beverly and Dorothy Hickman.

He served an exemplary career in the U.S. Navy, retiring as a chief petty officer. During his career of over 26 years, he earned many citations and awards, including the coveted E banner, for his ship. "E" for excellence, which sums up his life. He raised two sons, and after retirement from the Navy, he worked for the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, and drove buses seasonally for Ocean City, Md. He was a member of American Legion Post 24 in Dagsboro and the Masonic Lodge #37, also in Dagsboro. He was a hardworking man who enjoyed playing cards, and was a race fan.

He is survived by his two sons: Daniel Hickman of Millsboro and Kyle Hickman of Millsboro. He is also survived his sister: Ginger Steverson; and by a brother-in-law: Ed Dutton; along with one grandchild: Shelby Hickman; and two nephews: Allen and Gerald Dutton. His sister, Janet Dutton, as well as his parents, preceded him in death.

A Masonic Service followed by full military honors will be conferred Wednesday, Feb. 28, at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, at 11 a.m. Interment follows within the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Home of the Brave, 6632 Sharps Road, Milford, DE 19963, or Military Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 1787 C/O Carol Jones, 28365 Clark Ave., Millsboro, DE 19966.
