When Dr. Ronald Lieberman heard that Aug. 1 was National Air Force Day, he wanted to do something to give back to the Dover military community. In addition to a very active Dover Air Force Base, the other active armed forces, veterans and reservists are a vibrant part of the Dover community. As a result, Lieberman and his Delaware Spine Institute offered the entire military community free back exams that day.
"I know how hard our active troops, reservists and veterans work for us all, and I wanted to do something myself to give back to the Greater Dover military community,” said Lieberman, a physiatrist who specializes in treating acute and chronic back and neck pain at the Delaware Spine Institute in Dover. "After all, we all know freedom is not free."
As a result, Lieberman closed his normal, paid patient schedule for the day and put out the message to the Dover community to allow anyone with military experience to come in and receive a free back exam. Due to the demand, active military, veterans and reservists filled his calendar for the day. Lieberman heard their back and neck pain complaints and gave each a free back exam. Many decided to also make a follow-up appointment for a comprehensive evaluation to find a solution to their back ailments.
"Approximately 40 million people in the U.S. have acute or chronic pain, and 90 percent of Americans will have lower back pain at least once in their lifetime, and back and neck pain costs Americans over $100 billion annually," said Lieberman. "The only health problem more expensive than back and neck pain today is cancer."
Lieberman and his staff were proud to give back with free back and neck exams for the military. They plan to do so again next year and make it an annual tradition.
"My staff and I really enjoyed giving back today and helping those who serve or served in the armed forces, and God bless our military community," said Lieberman.
