‘Game of Floods’ workshop set for Milton April 14

Imagine it's the year 2050, and one is the city planner of an island that's threatened by sea-level rise and storms.

That's the scenario that Game of Floods workshop participants will confront Saturday, April 14, at Mariner Middle School, Milton from 9 a.m. to noon.Co-sponsored b y the Southeast Rural Community Assistance Project and the Milton Sustainability Committee, this free workshop focuses on real climate change issues.

The Game of Floods is an interactive game-based exercise designed to help participants understand the process of conducting vulnerability/risk assessments and think about strategies to protect public assets from current and future flooding. During the game, attendees progress through a series of steps from climate science, to asset inventory, to vulnerability, risk, and adaptation planning. They must decide how to protect the island from floods and ever-rising sea levels.

Participants are assigned roles (city council member, power company representative, homeowners association representative), given a municipal budget, and a sea level rise scenario that they're instructed to plan for.

The budget and scenarios vary by group, with some teams forced to make tough decisions based on their judgment of how infrastructure needs intersect with residential health and safety and the local economy. For every choice, there are costs - some financial, some social, and some environmental.
