Herbert McKinley Hood, former police officer
Herbert McKinley Hood of Hollis, Okla., departed this life Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018, after an extended illness.
He was born Dec. 6, 1959, in Rehoboth to Harry Layfield Pettyjohn and Cora Hood Miller. He graduated from Cape Henlopen High School in 1978 and joined the Army. After 20 years, he retired from the military and joined the police force in Lawton, Okla. Upon leaving the force in Lawton, he briefly worked on the police forces in Cache and Hollis.
He served as a deacon and kitchen supervisor at the Calvary Community Church. Mic, as we lovingly called him, was a well-loved person and his smile would light up a room. He loved working in his community and creating an OBBS (Our Boys Becoming Successful) program for the young men of Hollis. He loved cooking for others, hunting and deep-sea fishing with his brothers. He will always live in our hearts.
He is preceded in death by his father Harry Layfield Pettyjohn; his stepfather Martin Miller Sr.; his daughter Brittany; and brother Gerald. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Bakeisha; daughters Megan, Mandi and Promise; sons Brian and Isaac; and three grandchildren Jayden, Casen and Brysen. He also leaves his mother (Cora); four sisters, Barbara Baker (Dale), Marshelia Hood, Jeremy Williams (Al) and Benetta Miller; three brothers, Martin Miller (Janice), John Miller and Antonio Miller. He leaves loving in-laws Robert (Daddio) and JoAnn Campbell; sisters-in-law, Yolanda and Stephanie Campbell; a brother-in-law, Tyrone Campbell (Terracia); an aunt and uncle, nieces, nephews, and a host of cousins and friends.
Celebration of Life Service will be held Monday, Nov. 19, at 11 a.m. Family and friends may visit one hour prior to the service at Bennie Smith Funeral Home 274 N. Rehoboth Blvd.. Milford.
