Communications students tour broadcasting areas for Philadelphia 76ers

Students from Delaware Technical Community College’s Communications program were recently treated to an exclusive tour of the in-house marketing and broadcasting areas of the Philadelphia 76ers.

The tour was presented by Wyatt Yearout, 76ers media relations associate, who led the students through the various jobs and responsibilities of the internal public relations department of the basketball team. Inside the Wells Fargo Center, they were treated to a sneak peek at the team’s new uniform design, a tour of the press room and marketing areas, and even a walk onto the court before the team’s pregame practice.

“This tour was actually the initiative of one of our first-year students, Lauren Moon,” said Communcations Department Chair Rob Rector. “She had heard of the trip we usually take to the Phillies College Media nights, and Lauren made the initial call to the Sixers.”

“It was really interesting to see how many moving parts there were to the organization,” said Moon.

She added that all those moving parts also meant opportunities for students within the program. “There is always room for growth,” Moon said. “You can definitely work your way to your dream position. Some of us will have to work twice as hard, but in the end, it can definitely pay off.”

The Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia is home to the 76ers basketball team, Flyers hockey, the Philadelphia Soul arena football team, and the Philadelphia Wings National Lacrosse League team. It also hosts NCAA Basketball, as well as several big-name concerts throughout the year.

After the tour, the students stayed to watch the Sixers defeat the Los Angeles Clippers.

“I had never been in a stadium for an NBA game before, so to see everything in person was amazing,” said Communications student Howard Mumford. He added that the tour prior to the game was eye-opening. “I had no idea what [Yearout] did before the game is what the department would be responsible for, so it was interesting to see that.”
