Cape shook free from Lake Forest on Dec. 5 at Cape’s Big House in the opening dual meet match of the season, winning 45-26 on the strength of five pins, two forfeits and one decision.
The Spartans were coming off an impressive second-place finish at the Polytech Invitational, while Cape returned from the Southern Slam banged up with three starters – Andre Currie, Roy Jones and Jonah Robertson – out of the lineup.
Pins were secured by Anthony Caruso at 132, Dewaun Johnson at 138, Finbar Rishko at 145, Sam Jones at 182 and Billy Ott at 285. Mikey Frederick at 126 and Eduardo Saez at 195 won by forfeit.
Carson Kammerer at 120 won by a 9-3 decision.
“Right now, it’s a worst-case scenario for some of our guys who are dropping down [weight] but wrestling up a weight class,” said coach Chris Mattioni.
The injuries along with other guys not yet at weight has forced other wrestlers into bigger roles.
“We are in a transition,” Mattioni said. “This weekend’s Milford Invitational will be good. Most of our kids will get five matches over two days, and we need the work.”
The Vikings host Sussex Central next Wednesday, Dec. 12.
“That’s as real as it gets,” Mattioni said.
