Evelyn Mary Christopher, devout Catholic

December 13, 2018

Evelyn Mary Christopher, 88, of Rehoboth Beach, formerly of Potomac, Md., passed away Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018, at her home.  She was born June 3, 1930, in Washington, D.C., daughter of the late Edwin Casper Jacobson and Elizabeth Mary (Mack) Jacobson.

Mrs. Christopher grew up in Bethesda, Md., and graduated from Immaculata High School. She attended the University of Maryland, where she earned a bachelor's degree and met her beloved husband, George E. Christopher Sr., with whom she shared 67 wonderful years. He preceded her in death just this past October.

Mrs. Christopher was a devout Catholic and attended Mass daily.  She loved nature, taking long walks, and feeding her birds, squirrels, foxes and bunnies in her backyard.  Many days were spent walking by the ocean and in the woods and fields, binoculars and bird book in hand.  After raising her five children she was involved in establishing Christopher's Hardware Stores in Montgomery County, Md., in 1980, and was the president until her retirement. Mrs. Christopher was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and kept up with her family's activities and personal lives.  She always had a thirst for learning and a great zest for life, with lots of laughter. She was loved by all who knew her, and will be deeply missed.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Christopher was preceded in death by her brothers: Edwin and Jake. She is survived by her children: George E. Christopher Jr. (Mary Jo) of Rockville, Md., Evelyn Christopher Stevenson (Rees) of Lewes, James R. Christopher (Susan) of Marco Island, Fla., Michael W. Christopher (Kathryn) of Stevensville, Md., and Thomas M. Christopher (Glenna) of Mt. Airy, Md.; her 11 grandchildren; her eight great-grandchildren; her brother, James Jacobsen (Mary) of Bethesda; and her sister, Karen Witowski of Bethesda.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, at 11 a.m., at St. Edmond Catholic Church, 409 King Charles Ave., Rehoboth Beach.  Interment will be private.  Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Lewes.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Mrs. Christopher's memory to Little Sisters of the Poor, Jeanne Jugan Residence  4200 Harewood Road NE, Washington DC 20017-1554.
