Delmarva Christian girls down Salisbury Christian 51-27

February 21, 2019

It’s tough to beat the same team twice in a season, let alone three times, but the Delmarva Christian girls’ basketball team made it three wins over Salisbury Christian School with a 51-27 victory in the semifinals of the ESIAC Conference Tournament Feb. 19 at home.

The Lady Royals were down 9-8 at the end of the first quarter, but forged ahead to a 21-15 lead at the half. They extended their lead to 41-15 at the close of the third, then finished with a 24-point win.

Sophomore Kandice Schlabach scored 15 points, including three from behind the three-point line. Savannah Stewart added 11, Grace Fetterman hit for six and Claire Marshall finished with five. Hannah Czapp, Maiah Massotti, Mara Agapito, Katie Hill and Sara Walton also scored for the Royals.

“We knew this was a big game for us,” said Schlabach. “So we all stepped up and started making our shots, better passes and had good ball movement. We were confident, but not overconfident.”

“Their defense did a good job in the first quarter,” said Royals coach Jedidiah Roach. “We weren’t capitalizing. We did well in transition, but couldn’t make our layups. We settled down and we were able to gather things back and get things back together.”

Roach was quick to praise his young guard Massotti.

“She gave us a huge spark off the bench,” he said. “She stepped up big time. She’s been bothered with a back injury and hasn’t played the last four games. We needed her tonight, and she provided great defense and scored for us.”

Salisbury Christian senior Alex Morrison led the Jags with 11 points.

The Lady Royals were set to travel to Worcester Prep Feb. 21 for the finals of the ESIAC Tournament. They previously lost to the Mallards 38-31 Dec. 5 and 42-35 Dec. 15.
