Cape softball spins its wheels at Laurel

Bulldogs’ Calloway throws two-hitter
March 28, 2019

The Cape softball team ran into a buzzsaw as Laurel junior pitcher Rachael Calloway allowed just two hits and the Bulldogs downed the Vikings 6-0 March 26 in Laurel.

Vikings centerfielder Rye Elliott notched both hits.

Savannah Reed went 3.1 innings and gave up just two earned runs. Marissa Frederick came in and gave up just one hit without allowing a run.

“Clearly this isn’t how we expected to start the season,” said Cape head coach Shannon Timmons. “We didn’t execute the game plan well enough to win today.”

The Vikings defense made seven errors in the game.

“The defense didn’t support our pitchers with our fundamental defensive play,” said Timmons. “Savannah and Marissa matched up well with Laurel’s pitcher statistically. We will make adjustments and move on.“

Elliott went 2-for-3 at the plate and had two put outs in center field to lead the day for the Vikings. Carlin Quinn and Kelsey Huling helped with double plays on defense.
