The Cape baseball team bounced back from its Milford loss with a 13-3 blowout of Smyrna April 4.
The Vikings started out strong with Mason Fluharty going yard in the first inning, scoring two runs. Grant Evans followed with a triple, scoring two runs, and he scored on a single by Hunter Rauch. They finished the big inning with five runs.
Fluharty, Evans and Luke Smailer each had two hits in the game. Ryan Gibbons, Timmy Vitella, Luke Johnson, Jackson Ostroski and Rauch each had a hit. Evans had four RBIs on the day, with Fluharty and Ostroski driving in two. Rauch and Vitella each knocked in a run.
Johnson went the distance despite getting hit by a liner in the second inning.
“Luke threw very well again, allowing just two earned runs,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “He showed a lot of toughness after being hit in the calf. All of his pitches were working on both sides of the plate.”
Cape had a good performance from each player in the batters’ box.
“We did a great job at the plate putting a lot of balls in play hard,” said Evick. “We had a goal of scoring every inning, and the kids did a nice job responding. We capitalized on a few mistakes in the fourth inning and put another four runs on the board. Luke Smailer had a very nice day going 2-for-2 with a double, walk and two runs scored.”
The Cape coach also praised his players in the field.
“We played solid defense, having one error on a play that apparently took Mason’s foot off of first base on a slow chopper in the infield,” Evick said.
