Beacon girls win nine-team Cape Relays

The Beacon girls’ track team won the Cape Relays April 12 by topping a field of nine teams. Beacon scored 78 points in the meet, while Postlethwait was second with 67 points. Mariner was sixth overall with 55.5 points.

The Beacon girls won three events, including the 4-by-800 relay with Ella Walker, Darcy Crotty, Lindsey Fernandez, and Ariana Adili-Khams, who won in 11:46.4. Maggie Browne and Lindsay D’Ambrogi won the long jump with a combined distance of 27-feet-2-inches, while Hailey Archambault and Jazmine Finney won the discus with a combined distance of 127-3.

In boys’ action, Beacon placed fourth in the meet with 56 points, while Mariner was eighth with 40 points. Beacon captured the 4-by-800 relay in a time of 10:00.5 with the team of Liam O’Donnell, Steven Hart, Aiden Bowman and Justin Friscia.

“The kids competed well tonight, and we were able to score in all the events to win the girls’ team championship,” said Beacon coach Gilbert Maull. “The confidence that the kids have now is much different than March, and they are starting to look like a competitive track team.”

Beacon and Mariner dual action

The Beacon boys raised their dual-meet record to 8-3 April 16 by beating district rival Mariner by a score of 70-39. Beacon won nine events, while Mariner won four events in the meet. Beacon’s James Webster and Liam O’Donnell both scored 11.25 points. Webster won the 100 meters in 13.0, the 200 meters in 27.1, and ran on the winning 4-by-200 relay team that crossed the line in 1:49.4. O’Donnell won the 1,600 meters in 5:15.9, the 800 meters in 2:30.9, and also ran on the winning 4-by-200 relay. Adam Bowman scored 10 points with a win in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.9 and the long jump with a leap of 16-8. DeShaun Lewis won the high jump at 4-10, while thrower Daeveon DeShields tossed 29-7½ to win the shot put.

Mariner’s Trey Leggins and DeShawn Calloway were stride-for-stride in the 400-meter race with Leggins edging Calloway out 59.4 to 59.6 for a season best. Mariner’s Cole Tori won the triple jump in 31-9, while Mariner’s Bryan Ramirez-Montano won the discus with a nice toss of 80-4 and placed second in the high jump with a 4-8 clearance. Mariner eighth-grader Jia Qi Xie placed second in both the 1,600 meters (5:44) and 800 meters (2:34).

The Beacon girls went to 11-0 in their dual-meet season with a win over Mariner 65-44. The meet was highlighted by nine event wins to Mariner’s four. Kacie Gibbons scored 11.25 points with a win in the 55-meter hurdles, Montana Jones won the 100 meters and anchored the winning 4-by-100 in 57.6 (with a dropped baton), and the 4-by-200 relay. Ally Stevenson, a sixth-grader, won the 1,600 meters and 800 meters in times of 6:06.1 and 2:46.2.

Jannia Currie won the 400 meters in 1:07.6 and cleared 4-8 in the high jump. Hailey Archambault won the shot at 28-9 and discus at 71-7.

The Mariner girls were buoyed by sixth-grade star Ali Stevenson, who took the 1,600 meters in a personal best of 6:06 and doubled back to win the 800 in 2:46. Eighth-grader Cailyn Bledsoe led a 1-2-3 Mariner sweep in the long jump, leaping a personal best 13-9, and also placed second in the discus 56-1.5. Eighth-grader Evelyn Turman won a neck-and-neck triple jump battle at 28-4, placed second in the 200 meters in 30.7 seconds, and took third in the long jump at 13-4.

Boston Marathon

A handful of locals competed in the historic Boston Marathon April 15 under hot and humid conditions. Holly Smith led the way in 3:21:34, while Martin Rodriguez was off his pace a bit to run 3:33.03. Griffin Lipman turned in a 3:36:56, while Cape graduate Elizabeth Redden ran 3:58:23. Betsy Tootell crossed the line in 4:51:02, followed by David Miller in 5:12:01. Among elite male runners, Kenneth Kipkemoi of Kenya averaged 4:53 a mile, racing through the 5K in 15:11, to win the race in a time of 2:07:57. Among elite female runners, Worknesh Degefa hit the line in 2:23:31.
