Enos Benbow leads field of 250 in Seashore Classic

The annual Seashore Classic, a half-marathon, 5K, and relay, was held Sunday morning from Irish Eyes to kick off the Irish Eyes 6-pack Racing Series. A total of 250 runners participated in the event that took them all the way to the south end of Cape Henlopen State Park at Gordons Pond and back. The two-person relay had almost 30 teams, and the relay exchange was located at the 6.55-mile turnaround mark.

Enos Benbow of Georgetown/Jamaica won the half marathon in a time of 1:23:02, while Brad Hertzler of Lancaster, Pa., was second in 1:28:06. Marcus White, 40, of Lewes rounded out the top three in 1:28:12 to capture the male masters.

Susan Greally of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., won the female half marathon in a time of 1:40:08, while Jordan Cohn of Earleville, Md., was second in 1:41:29. Leisa Villani, 60, of Virginia Beach, Va., rounded out the top three in 1:42:39 to win the female masters.

John Yanacek of Milford won the clydesdale division in a time of 1:59:06, while Zachary Crawford of Vienna, Va., was second in 2:14:54. William Everett of Wilmington was third in 2:26:18.

Meaghan Nana-Sinkam of Hockessin won the filly division in 2:24:59, while Lee Ann Waltz of Milton was second in 2:50:52.

Joey Hawley of Irwin, Pa., won the 5K race in 17:35, while young Beacon Middle School 5:06-miler Liam O’Donnell was second in 18:48. Chris Sherman of Lewes was third in 19:53.

Kim Geyer of Millersville, Pa., finished eighth overall to win the female title in 24:31, while Eugenija King of Rehoboth was second in 26:26. Nina Smeltzer of Rehoboth rounded out the top three in a time of 27:44 to win the female masters. J.R. Ward of Newark, Md., won the male masters in a time of 23:05.

Team Bob won the coed team division in a time of 1:31:37, while Hot to Trot won the female team division in 1:49:22. The B Team ran 1:40:28 to win the male team division.

The after-party was hosted by Tom and Charlene Jones of Irish Eyes.

DQ Dash

The 2nd annual DQ Dash 5K Run for Fireworks will be held at 6:15 p.m., Friday, May 17, beginning at the Lewes Dairy Queen. The course will take Bayview Avenue to Cedar Avenue to the turnaround near the Lewes Yacht Club before returning the same way to Dairy Queen. The event raises funds for the Go Fourth Lewes Fireworks Celebration, and runners or walkers can register on race day beginning at 5 p.m. Visit www.seashorestriders.com for more race information.

Flashlight Run

The 25th April Fools Moonlight Flashlight Run will take off from the Cape Henlopen State Park fishing pier at 8 p.m., Saturday, May 18. The course takes runners on a beautiful 3- to 5-mile run or walk through the park. Plenty of unique surfaces will challenge the feet throughout. If you are looking for even splits, a personal record, or mile markers, stay home! If you are looking for a challenging course, a lot of fun, and a great workout, we will see you on the starting line May 18. Happy April Fools Day!

There are no age-group awards, but the top 50 finishers will receive medals. The top 60 race participants will be given a glow-in-the-dark T-shirt, and a light/headlamp, flashlight, iPhone light, or strobe light is required for all runners. Participants will be given glow necklaces and glow bracelets, while glow paint and reflective tape are encouraged. Preregistration will close at noon, Saturday, May 18, and last-chance registration will open up at 7 p.m. for this unique race.

Beacon Track Banquet

The Beacon Track & Field Team will hold their annual end-of-year banquet at Irish Eyes Monday, May 20, with the boys’ banquet at 4:30 p.m. and the girls’ at 6:30 p.m. The boys finished the season with a 10-4 record, while the girls finished 14-0 and 96-1 over the past 10 years. The girls captured the Cape Relays and the McKinnon Invitational, and were second at the Jim Blades Invitational and the Delaware Middle School Classic. On Monday, athletes will receive certificates from Cape Henlopen School District, and highlighting the banquet will be the presentation of the following awards: Team MVP, Most Improved, Performance of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Leadership, Rising Star, and the Coaches Award. The guest speaker for the evening will be former Beacon standout jumper and sprinter Zoe Scott. She holds the Beacon high jump record of 5-feet-2-inches set five years ago when she was a Beacon eighth-grader.

Go Fast Camps

Summer is almost here which means fun in the sun, at the beach, and of course, at the Go Fast Running Camps. The Go Fast Elite Running Camp will be June 17-21 from 8 to 11 a.m. for ages 11-18 for both boys and girls. The camp costs $199 per athlete.

The Go Fast Youth Running Camp will be June 18-20 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for ages 6-10 for both boys and girls; cost is $99 per athlete. Contact Go Fast Sports Performance at 302-983-6050 for more information.
