Fenwick Island resident metalsmith, artist and designer Nancy LaMotte, will be introducing her line of sterling silver, bezel-set sea glass jewelry into the Lewes Historical Society’s Museum Store from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 22.
LaMotte’s one-of-a-kind creations will be for sale, on a permanent basis, at the museum store. The debut of her line is in conjunction with the 10th year of the Lewes Sea Glass and Coastal Arts Festival that is also hosted by the Lewes Historical Society. LaMotte was instrumental in bringing the very first sea glass festival to Lewes in 2008, through the North American Sea Glass Association, of which she is a member.
LaMotte, formerly a resident of Lewes, graduated with a degree in graphic design from Boston University. She began creating jewelry with sea glass more than 18 years ago. She collected sea glass along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic when her children were young, and found herself drawn to the beautiful colors and shapes. “I design each piece based on the natural shape and color of the shard as I find it,” said LaMotte. Her experience in the jewelry industry and art education led to the formation of her Delaware-operated business, Chesapeake Seaglass Jewelry.
“Sea glass is such a happy subject. I am so excited to be bringing it back to Lewes,” LaMotte said. LaMotte will be on hand, at the store, for three hours Saturday to talk to customers about sea glass and show her work. Some of her beautiful pieces are designed with Lewes shipwreck sea glass that washed up along Lewes Beach in 2006, from the wreckage of the Severn in 1774. “I love to hear about the strong emotional attachment people have to the treasures they find on the beach and to share my creations and stories with them as well,” she said.
