Registration for new students in the fall session of the English as a Second Language Program at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Rehoboth Beach will be held at the church from 9 to 11 a.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 3 and Thursday, Sept. 5. Students may attend either the morning or evening sessions, or both.

There is a $25 fee for student textbook and workbook. There is no charge to attend the classes, and there is free child care for children 6 months to 11 years old during all the sessions. Classes begin Tuesday, Sept. 10.

The church is at 20276 Bay Vista Road, Rehoboth Beach, behind the Big Fish restaurant on Route 1.

In operation since 2004, the ESL program is the largest of its kind in Sussex County, with 150 students in the 2018-19 session. It is open to all regardless of religious affiliation. Classes for adults at proficiency levels from beginner to advanced are offered in day and evening sessions. They focus on social interaction vocabulary and conversation, grammar, writing and reading comprehension skills. Students represent over 20 countries, with a predominance of native Spanish-language speakers. They are assisted by 40 volunteer teachers who come from all professional backgrounds.

The program has been awarded a grant by the Arsht-Cannon Fund to to enable the program to offer tuition-free classes for two years, 2019-21. Since 2008, the Arsht-Cannon Fund of the Delaware Community Foundation has made funding of language and education programs a priority and is making a powerful impact on Hispanic families and communities in Delaware.

For the second time, the ESL program at LCOS in Rehoboth Beach has been awarded a grant by the Longwood Foundation to support program operations, books and supplies. The foundation invests in nonprofit organizations that will empower individuals and communities, with the intention to provide grants that will accelerate an organization’s success toward addressing a community challenge within its geographic boundaries.
