James ‘Jim’ C. Pope II, former real estate broker
James “Jim” C. Pope II, 79, formerly of Lewes, passed away at his Cape Coral, Fla. home Thursday, Aug. 22, 2019. He and his beloved wife, Ellen Brett, also maintained a residence in Lewes. They enjoyed the beautiful sunsets from their home on Lewes Beach.
Jim was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, May 11, 1940, and grew up in Camden, N.J. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and then served in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence. He worked as a management consultant, and then worked in the office machine business. He was a part-time alderman in Dewey Beach. He finished his career as a successful real estate broker in Lewes. Upon retirement, he and Ellen moved to Florida. He loved traveling with Ellen and spending time walking their faithful dog companion of many years, Newman. During the past few years, he enjoyed spending time with Lazarus, a dog rescued from Hurricane Irma.
Jim was very handy and had a talent for repairing electronic equipment. He loved watching and playing basketball, and coached a junior basketball league. He was very active in Boy Scout Troop 1 of Lewes where he spent time with his sons, and he served a term as Scoutmaster. He loved the Cape Region, and enjoyed bird watching and sailing. He was an avid sports fan.
Jim is survived by his wife of many years, Ellen Brett of Cape Coral. He is also survived by his son Christopher Pope of Santa Cruz, Calif., and his son Gregory Pope and his wife Sandra Reyes Pope of Lewes and Newark. He is also survived by his stepson Joe Brett of Belle Haven, Va.
Jim is preceded in death by his sons Roderic Pope of Georgetown and Jonathan Pope of Colorado Springs, Colo.. He is also predeceased by his parents, Anita Baynum Pope and James C. Pope of Lewes.
