Traditional shipbuilding demo set in Lewes Sept. 16
Shipbuilding has been an inherent part of the history and economy of the Delaware coast, particularly in Lewes, with ships built and launched from the Lewes seaport since the 17th century.
The Lewes Historical Society will sponsor a program and demonstration on traditional shipbuilding from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, Sept. 16, at the Lewes History Museum.
This celebration of a historic trade will include a live demonstration of techniques used to make a ship’s spar, using period tools and techniques. Younger visitors are encouraged to join museum staff to build and paint their own miniature wooden vessels.
The museum is at 101 Adams Ave., Lewes. Admission is $5 per person. To purchase tickets, visit the Lewes History Museum or go to www.historiclewes.org.
Preregistration is encouraged for visitors with children interested in creating a vessel.
