There was electricity in the air at Legends Stadium Oct. 24, as Cape Henlopen School District’s middle school football teams filled the stands with fans, families and band members cheering on their favorite hometown Vikings.
Beacon and Mariner battled through four quarters of physical and highly emotional play, and the Beacon Vikings walked away with a 41-0 victory.
Jeremiah Jackson scored three touchdowns for Beacon, Miles Godwin ran for two touchdowns and Jamez West added another. Brandon Somoza-Lima connected for two PATs and launched several kickoffs deep into the Mariner defensive end.
Beacon quarterback Bren Scott threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jackson in the second quarter and also intercepted a Mariner pass in the contest.
Scott, Nehemiah Ricketts, Nai’Darion Dore and Gavin Maedler led the Beacon defense that held Mariner scoreless.
"I am proud of the players individually and as a team,” said Beacon head coach John Parker. “The progress we have made from Aug. 26 until now is incredible. This team has bonded together and worked hard to improve from week to week. I’m excited to see what our eighth-grade players become as student-athletes next year in high school. A special thanks to my assistant coaches for all of their help and support throughout the season.”
The Mariner squad never gave up and played hard for the entire game.
“It was a tough experience for our guys,” said Mariner head coach Billy Collick. “They played as hard as they could and did what they could. They kept plugging away, and we will get better.”
Beacon Middle School will travel to Woodbridge Tuesday, Oct. 29, and Mariner will travel to Delmar Wednesday, Oct. 30.
