Mess hall for the Lewes Civilian Conservation Corps
March 24, 2020
When Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) members were assigned to dig mosquito ditches in the salt marshes of Delaware in the 1930s, they lived in two hastily constructed buildings on land along Savannah Road in Lewes where the Huling Cove senior citizen apartments now stand.
The members slept in one of the buildings, which was pictured in a recent Cape Gazette edition at capegazette.com/node/198007. They ate in the other building - pictured here - seated at picnic tables with meals prepared by CCC kitchen staff, shown in white shirts in the back of this photo.
Our thanks to Kathleen Pedersen of Lewes who provided these photos.
