Sometime in June, the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail will have a new extension. A crew is in the process of laying down the stone bed and paving a section from Log Cabin Hill Road to Coolspring and Route 9, said Charles “C.R.” McLeod, director of Delaware Department of Transportation community relations.
In addition, a crew is in the process of removing tracks and clearing the trail corridor from Route 9 to Georgetown, where Phase 3 of the project will begin this summer.
Phase 2, from Savannah Road to Log Cabin Hill Road, Lewes, officially opened in June 2019. Part of the trail has been named in honor of Tom Draper, the owner of WBOC-TV who died from injuries sustained in a crash Sept. 7, 2017, when he was hit by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle on Slaughter Neck Road.
Phase 1, from Gills Neck Road to Savannah Road, Lewes, opened in October 2016 and includes a trailhead at the Lewes Public Library. The trail provides a link to the Junction-and-Breakwater Trail between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach.
When completed, the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail will be 17 miles long.
