It’s apple-picking season in Delaware

An old bluegrass song reminds us: “Peaches ripen in the summertime, apples ripen in the fall; if I can’t be with the one I love, I don’t want no one at all.”

This picture postcard shows a scene from September 1907 in downtown Wyoming, Delaware, south of Dover, now familiar as Fifer Orchards territory. Apple pickers of all ages sit on a wagon loaded with baskets of apples, and overturned, empty baskets that serve as seats.

One hundred and ten years later, the federal Census of Agriculture reported that Delaware farmers in 2017 produced and sold $3.5 million worth of fruits, tree nuts and berries.
