Packing Sussex County apples for market in 1923
November 10, 2020
Almost all of Delaware’s 2020 apples have been picked, sold, stored and shipped as our unseasonably warm autumn continues to provide ideal harvesting conditions. This photo from July of 1923 shows employees at the Delaware Apple Company in Bridgeville preparing for that year’s apple harvest. Apples have long been the state’s most important fruit crop. According to information from University of Delaware’s Cooperative Extension Service, Delaware’s apple growers produce more than 10 million pounds per year.
