The clock just ran out on the Cape football team as they fell to visiting Caesar Rodney 21-13 Nov. 27 at Legends Stadium. The Vikings move to 3-3, while the Riders are 5-1.
Both teams traded touchdowns in the first half, as the Riders struck first with a 59-yard bomb from Tremere Woodlin to Deontre Cale, who hooked up again for a 28-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
Cape answered with a 20-yard run by Jordan Baines and a 28-yard reception to Chancler Johnson. Austin Carey’s extra point was good on the first touchdown, but wide right on the second score.
The teams went into the halftime break with CR taking a slim 14-13 lead. The third quarter had the teams dueling scoreless.
The Riders scored in the fourth quarter on a four-yard dive by Woodlin. Tyler Peeler successfully kicked all three extra points for the Riders. CR held on to take the 21-13 victory.
Jaden Davis continued to be one of the top DIAA leaders in rushing with 133 yards on 19 carries, and he caught two passes for six yards. Baines rushed five times for 48 yards and caught two passes for 19 yards.
Junior quarterback Hank D’Ambrogi went 10-for-15 for 93 yards and a score.
Johnson had 13 yards rushing and caught a pass for 28 yards and a touchdown. Kurtis Wells caught two passes for 24 yards. Ja'Vaughn Burton snagged three D’Ambrogi passes for 17 yards.
The Vikings tallied 283 yards in total offense.
“We really thought we should have won that game,” said Cape head coach J.D. Maull. “We didn’t play like we wanted. We didn’t make a couple of blocks, and we didn’t make a couple of tackles. That hurt us. We didn’t score in the second half, which is really not like this team. The kids are disappointed and the coaches are disappointed. But there is a reason Caesar Rodney is 5-1. We’re getting there. We’ll be ready for Dover.”
The Vikings travel to Dover Friday, Dec. 4, for a Northern Division matchup with the Senators. Game time is 7 p.m. No visiting fans are allowed. You can watch the game live on the NFHS Network.
