A different brand of presidential inauguration parade in 1957

January 12, 2021

Delaware and most other states in the nation joined in the festive parade on Jan. 21, 1957, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower was inaugurated for a second term. This photograph shows Delaware’s parade float making its way along Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C.

This year’s inauguration parade, what there is of it in light of the coronavirus pandemic and civil insurrection in the nation’s capital, is expected to be a far more solemn and muted affair. Biden plans for a formal inauguration and speech on the west front of the U.S. Capitol with a scaled-down parade, details of which are still being worked out.

According to reports, Pennsylvania Avenue between the Capitol and the White House has been repaved in anticipation of whatever ceremonies and parade there will be.
