August 27, 2021

Capping off a busy summer regatta season, Lewes Yacht Club hosted three fleets of sailboats Aug. 21. Races on Aug. 22 were called off because of inclement weather.

Local racers fared well in the events. In the Rowland Marshall Mobjack National Championship, former national champs Mark Arnold and Matt Franks of Chesapeake, Va., took top honors, followed by former champs Sarah Lester and Tony Ingram of Lewes Yacht Club in second, and Paynter Ingram and D.J. Parry, also of LYC, in third.

The team of Lester and Ingram was forced out of the third race with equipment failure, losing valuable points. They won two races and finished second in two others. The team of Arnold and Franks won three races and finished second twice.

The Family Award was presented to Tom and Duncan Ward; the Anchor Award went to Al Williamson, and the Sportsmanship Award was given to Tom Ward.

Nancy Jaywork of Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association won the Sunfish Regional Championship followed by fellow RBSA sailors Jim Knab, second, and John Barrere, third. David Miller, who has Lewes ties, finished fourth, and Lewes Yacht Club sailor Connie Miller was fifth. Only four points separated the top three racers.

In the Hobie Summer Winds Regatta, Walter Myers of Ocean City, N.J., finished first in the Waves class. His son, Tyler Myers, LYC sailing instructor, finished in fourth place.

Other Hobie winners included skippers Rich McVeigh, Hobie 16, and Bill Colgan, Hobie 18.
