Schell billboards spread Christmas cheer

Twenty-seven signs are switched to holiday messages at the beginning of November
December 10, 2021

Be careful when you approach the Schell Brothers naughty and nice Christmas billboard on the southbound lanes of Route 1. When this reporter stepped out to take a photograph, the meter spun directly to naughty.

Each November for more than 10 years, Schell Brothers has been turning all of its – now 27 – area roadway billboards into unique, heartwarming and even humorous Christmas greetings.

From a lighthouse to a Christmas countdown, many of those billboards line both sides of Route 1 between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach.

Alyssa Titus, director of Schell Brothers marketing, said all the ideas and design work are done by the marketing staff. “Our designers are inspired by the happiness and merriment of Christmas,” she said.

They start brainstorming ideas long before people are even thinking about the holiday. Their goal is to get the billboards in place the first week in November.

Titus said she's amazed at the outpouring of appreciation for the billboards. “We get letters and people stopping by the office. It's such a positive thing, because spreading happiness is our mission. And Christmas is the perfect time to spread happiness,” she said.

The company has also sponsored the Schellville Christmas Village over the past five years. This year's village has been expanded to a 6-acre site behind Tanger Outlets Seaside near Rehoboth Beach.

Schell Brothers is a premier home builder in the Delaware beach area and Richmond, Va.
