The crowd at Caravel was a little “hyped down” Dec. 22 in a much-ballyhooed meeting between two of Delaware’s top scholastic wrestling teams.

Cape was missing frontline studs Luke Bender (152), C.J. Fritchman (160) and Carson Kammerer (170). The Buccaneers were without starters Marcello Ioannoni (120) and Alex Hall (285).

Caravel won the quick match 52-25 behind seven falls and two tech falls.

Caravel wins by pin and tech fall were Clifton Bakhsh (106) over Jacob Goodsell (tech fall); Eddie Radecki (113) over Maxim Meadows; Luke Poore (126) over Josh Wright; Dylan Knight (132) over Josh Alvares (tech fall); Michael Kling (138) over Andrew Schaen; John Antonio (152) over Jayden Johnson; Alex Poore (160) over Hayden Wheeler; Nicholas Hall (170) over Leo Hunsberger; and Matthew Duarte (182) over Jack Wiggins.

The Vikings answered with falls by Holt Baker (120) over Shane Canty and Mikey Frederick (145) over Jordan Miller.

Cape’s other wins were Alex Taylor (195) with a major decision over Brock Rhoades 18-8 and Dalton Deevey (220) with a 6-5 decision over Ky’shwn Drumgo. Lucas Ruppert received a forfeit.

“We looked for a hole in the schedule to see if the match could be moved to later in the season, but there wasn’t a date that worked for both teams,” said Cape coach Chris Mattioni. “There was no thought given to canceling the match. We now have four days off before returning to practice Monday. We wrestle at the Governor Mifflin Holiday Tournament Dec. 29-30. We expect all our guys to be healthy and ready to roll.”
