The Cape minor league 8-10 all-star team won the District 3 title July 11, with a 7-4 win over Georgetown in Millsboro. The Cape squad advances to play in the state tournament, which is slated to begin Tuesday, July 19, in Camden.

Cape used nine hits, consistent pitching and errorless play in the field to garner the win. The game was a winner-take-all matchup after Cape won the first game July 10.

The Cape squad took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run double by Taylor Huff. Alison Swift singled and scored Huff, then Carlee Cabello scored on a Georgetown error.

Georgetown came back to cut the Cape lead in half when Jade Womer doubled, scoring Olivia Balback and Georgia Murray.

Cape scored two in the fourth on RBIs from Makaila Sellers and Mikayla Pollard. Georgetown added two in the fifth on a Balback single, but Cape added an insurance run in the fifth when Huff scored on an Olivia Lancaster single.

Windish struck out the side in the top of the sixth to garner the win and bring the District 3 banner to the Cape team.

Sellers, Pollard, Huff, Cabello, Lancaster and Swift all knocked in runs for Cape.

Pollard started the game in the circle, going 1.1 innings and striking out three Georgetown batters. Windish came in from the bullpen and threw 4.2 innings, scattering seven hits and striking out seven. She picked up the win.

“I’m proud of the way we played in the tournament,” said Windish. “The team played great tonight. I’m proud of how I played, but I’m really proud of my team.”

Georgetown was led by Olivia Balback and Jade Womer, who each delivered two RBIs. Womer added a double. Georgia Murry, Tori Millman and Aspen Schaeffer each had a hit for the visitors.

Brooke Holston went the distance in the circle, allowing nine hits and striking out seven batters.

“I am extremely proud of my team, coaches, parents and myself, ” said Cape manager Jordyn Virden. “This is my first year coaching, and I never expected to make it this far. All season I preached to the girls that if we get at least 1% better every practice and control what we can control, we will make it far. Cape will always have a special place in my heart, and I’m so proud to be coaching this all-star team.”
