October 11, 2022
Hundreds of self-advocates and their supporters participated in the annual Boardwalk Buddy Walk in Rehoboth Beach Oct. 8.
The Boardwalk Buddy Walk was created in 2006. The mission of the walk is to create a community where people with Down syndrome, or any cognitive disorder, can live, learn, work and play. As of the event, a little more than $62,000 was raised toward the Boardwalk Buddy Walk Fund.
For more information, go to ds-stride.org/boardwalkbuddywalk or email info@boardwalkbuddywalk.com.
The Salvation Army’s Creative heARTS program was on site, selling artwork made by some of the self-advocates. Delaware director of the program Christy Cugno and artist Marvin Walston show off some the artwork.
Rep. Steve Smyk, R-Milton; Sen. Ernie Lopez, R-Lewes; and Speaker of the House Rep. Pete Schwartzkopf, D-Rehoboth Beach, cheer on participants.
Longtime volunteer Michelle Hetherington no longer lives locally, but she was recognized for all her hard work over the years.
Members of the Cape Henlopen High School marching band and cheer squad encourage participants as they finish at the Bandstand.
